and many others.
- Cast a wide net. Set up automatic searches on the job boards so you
will be emailed daily with listings. Do not limit your searches to
telecommuting opportunities as this limitation doesn’t seem to be used
consistently. Select Contract-1099/Independent & Contract-W2.
- Decide whether you want to publish your resume. Doing so will
subject you to many phone calls from many people across the world, all
of whom you need to carefully vet before committing. Placing very
prominent words to the effect, “Telecommuting Contracts Only” wherever
appropriate and in the header of each resume page may eliminate
inquiries for full-time and contract on-site positions but probably not.
- Visit the forums on Dice.com. Dice was probably the first IT
contractors job board and can be a good source of advice for first
time contractors.
While work at home contracts aren’t common, I’m noticing more and more
lately. I have recently been asked to lead a five person development
and implementation team from my office for the first time in my
career. Perhaps people are realizing it isn’t always necessary for
workers to be on-site to be productive.

Just one thing to be aware of… many times, the same job may appear as different jobs being offered by different firms…. it’s not uncommon for ABC Employment Agency to find out about the job being offered by Jones Manufacturing and post it as their own… And then XYZ Consulting Group also finds the job and posts it…. and NOP Jobs posts it… and Smith Co posts it… and….
Well, in the end, you have the same, single job opening posted by 5 or 6 or 7 or ____ different companies….
And, in some cases, XYZ Consulting lists a job – THAT MAY OR MAY NOT BE FILLED – only to get you into their files and contact you for other positions that may open up – related to what you do or not…. I’ve actually been contacted (through Dice and Hotjobs and Monster) by temp agencies and head-hunters who are just looking for a warm body to fill a spot…. and in some cases, they may not even have the job on their books….
One othter thing – depending on where you live – most agencies charge a fee to place a person in a position – sometimes the fee is paid by the employer – and sometimes, it’s paid by the employee – YOU – and can be a big chunk of change…
So read all the fine print….
